The core objective of this position is to setup and conduct controlled laboratory experiment utilizing 2D Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and Tomographic PIV (Tomo-PIV) techniques to capture the dynamics of microplastics in aquatic environments. Then the dominant mechanisms and rates of in-stream microplastics dynamics, including settling velocity, retention, and transport, will be resolved utilizing the complex fluid hydrodynamics. Additionally, a theoretical and mathematical model will be developed to a novel process-based models for the microplastics transport and decay in the riverine environments.
