Overview

This position is responsible for developing and implementing health and safety plans, enforcing policies, and evaluating practices and facilities to ensure compliance with Federal, State, and local government regulations and Clarkson University safety standards. They conduct safety trainings, monitor compliance, investigate accidents, and provide recommendations for improvement. They also communicate guidelines to employees, report on health and safety issues, and develop relevant policies to maintain a safe workplace. Their focus is on promoting occupational health and safety and minimizing risks for employees. The position is highly customer service oriented, self-motivated, and operates with minimal oversight.

 

Responsibilities

  • Identify best practices and lead continuous improvement initiatives to reduce work process risks, raise safety awareness, and improve safe work practices.
  • Inspect and evaluate the environment, equipment, and processes in working areas to ensure compliance with Federal, State, and local government regulations and Clarkson University safety standards.
  • Facilitate a work environment that supports and rewards a safe and healthy culture.
  • Conduct and coordinate training in areas such as safety rules and regulations, hazardous condition monitoring, and use of safety equipment.
  • Perform safety audits and inspect facilities, machinery, and safety equipment to identify and correct potential hazards, and to ensure compliance with safety regulations.
  • Take appropriate action to mitigate or eliminate unsafe conditions, operations or hazards.
  • Exercise emergency authority to stop and prevent unsafe acts.
  • Investigate accidents, near miss incidents, and occupational injuries to determine causes and identify preventative measures.
  • Provide technical advice, coaching, guidance, and mentoring to employees on safety initiatives and necessary changes.
  • Coordinate all third-party compliance inspections for fire alarm systems, sprinkler systems, elevators, rolling fire doors, anchor points, bleachers & grandstands, fire extinguishers, mechanical lifts and chain hoists.
  • Act as liaison between Clarkson University and NYS Office of Fire Prevention & Control (OFPC).
  • Coordinate and administer quarterly fire drills.
  • Assist and support Fire Safety Specialist with all fire safety programs surrounding students, faculty & staff.
  • Work closely with Facilities & Services to address safety issues and concerns associated with building infrastructure and/or design.
  • Participate as an active member of Clarkson’s Emergency Response Team.
  • Coordinate medical screening and surveillance requirements for Facilities & Services staff, such as medical evaluations for individuals required to wear a respirator, audiometric testing for individuals in Clarkson’s hearing conservation program, DOT physical for individuals that hold a commercial driver’s license (CDL), and Hepatitis B vaccine series for those with reasonably anticipated job-related contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials (OPIM).
  • Monitor Maintenance Connection for EHS-related daily work orders, creation of PMs, and asset management.
  • Work closely with the Facilities GIS Specialist to ensure safety equipment is properly documented in University GIS maps.
  • Develop and implement health and safety policies and standard operating procedures, enforce policies, and evaluate practices and facilities to ensure compliance with Federal, State, and local government regulations and Clarkson University safety standards.
  • Coordinate employee safety programs to determine their adequacy from a Facilities perspective, safety perspective, and University perspective.
  • Live out the Clarkson University values in all daily activities.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Qualifications

Education:

Minimal Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree.

In lieu of a Bachelor’s degree, 6 years or more experience in Environmental Health & Safety, Occupational Safety & Health, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Health Science, or closely related field

New York State driver’s license and a driving record acceptable to the University

 

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health & Safety, Occupational Safety & Health, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Health Science, or closely related field

 

Experience:

Minimal Experience:

5-7 years of progressive field safety experience

OSHA 30-hour Construction or General Industry Outreach training and certification

Certified Code Enforcement Official

 

Preferred Experience:

Certified OSHA General Industry Outreach Instructor

CSP (Certified Safety Professional) or CIH (Certified Industrial Hygienist)
